The Mermaid of Newhall Lake

Ennistymon may have its Púca but in Clarecastle/Ballyea we have our Mermaid! Reading through the Clare section of the 1937 Schools’ Project now held in Dúchas, there are 92 stories of mermaids. 26 of these relate to our Mermaid of Newhall. Children all over Clare knew her tale back then. That knowledge has lessened, so to put that right, we have posted a compilation of folklore about our Mermaid on our website. Her story is also told in a new song composed by a young local composer. Read and listen all about her on the two links below.
In August 2023, Merfolk, comprised of Seán Lyons, Aisling Lyons and Dermot Sheedy, launched their first single, The Ballad of Killone, at the Milwaukee Irish Fest.
The Atlantic Technological University, Galway City, in collaboration with Clarecastle & Ballyea Heritage & Wildlife Group and the Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN) has worked on a number of projects in the past year. Samples of work by the students are two fine animated films of the Mermaid which can be viewed below.
Our thanks to the students and the lecturer, Gary Dempsey of ATU.
