Cancelled Book 1 Town of Clare (Clarecastle) 1858

Claretown or Clarecastle Revision /Cancelled Book 1858

The first revision or cancelled book shows changes notified to the Valuation Office up to December 1858 as noted in the front page of the ledger. Original names from 1855 are struck out (cancelled) and changes (revisions) are noted in a different colour. Unlike later revision books, notes in the margin of ledger pages do not tell us what year changes were notified to the Valuation Office.

The changes show a number of changes to occupiers in the three- four year period since the original Griffith Valuation was completed in 1855. A significant change is the designation of lots or tenements 1 and 1a Quay Road which ceased its role as a Militia Barracks by the Board of Ordnance.

The 1861 census was the last census in which Clare Commons and Clare Town were enumerated separately. The 1861 census shows the continued decline in the population. The population of Clare Town declined to 495 people in 92 houses, a decline of 397 people and 57 households 1851-1861. In comparison the population of Clare Commons was 393 living in 85 houses which represents a small increase of eleven people and an additional twelve households 1851-1861.

Transcriber notes: there are a few surnames which are illegible and these are noted in the right margin.
